  • Portafilter

Step-by-Step Guide:

Choose the Right Distributor Size:

  • Ensure your distributor fits your portafilter basket snugly. Distributors come in various diameters, so select one that matches your portafilter size (e.g., 58mm, 53mm).

Grind the Coffee:

  • Grind your coffee beans to the desired fineness for espresso. The grind size should be fine, similar to table salt.
  • Aim for a consistent amount of coffee for each shot, typically around 18-20 grams for a double shot. Use a digital scale for precision if needed.

Fill the Portafilter:

  • Place the portafilter under the grinder and dispense the ground coffee into it. Ensure the coffee is evenly distributed and there are no significant mounds.

Adjust the Distributor Depth:

  • Most distributors allow you to adjust the depth to control how much pressure is applied to the coffee grounds. To adjust the depth:
    • Unscrew or rotate the adjustment mechanism (usually located at the base or side of the distributor) to raise or lower the distribution blades.
    • Set the depth to match the level of coffee in your portafilter. A good starting point is to set the blades just below the surface of the coffee grounds.

Distribute the Coffee Grounds:

  • Place the distributor on top of the coffee-filled portafilter.
  • Gently spin the distributor several times. This action will spread the coffee grounds evenly across the basket, creating a uniform surface.
  • Ensure that the distributor is level and that the coffee grounds are evenly distributed without any visible gaps or mounds.

Check the Distribution:

  • After distributing, check the surface of the coffee grounds. It should be level and even.
  • If the surface is not even, adjust the depth of the distributor and repeat the distribution process.

Tamp the Coffee:

  • After distributing, use a tamper to compress the coffee grounds evenly. Apply firm and even pressure to ensure a flat and compact puck.

Brew the Espresso:

  • Lock the portafilter into your espresso machine and start the brewing process.
  • Observe the extraction. It should be even and consistent, with a steady flow of espresso.

Tips for Optimal Distribution:

  • Consistency: Use the same distribution technique and depth adjustment for each shot to maintain consistency.
  • Cleanliness: Keep your distributor clean to avoid any build-up of coffee oils or grounds, which can affect the distribution process.
  • Practice: Like many aspects of espresso making, mastering distribution takes practice. Experiment with different depths and techniques to find what works best for your setup.

By following these steps and adjusting your coffee distributor properly, you can achieve more consistent and balanced espresso shots, enhancing the overall quality of your coffee.
