Ingredients:

  • Coarsely ground coffee beans (choose a medium to dark roast for best results)
  • Cold or room temperature water

Equipment:

  • A large jar or pitcher
  • A fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth
  • A coffee grinder (if you have whole beans)
  • A stirring spoon

Steps:

Measure and Grind Coffee Beans:

  • Use a ratio of 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee to 4 cups of water. Adjust the amount according to your desired quantity.
  • If you have whole beans, grind them coarsely, similar to the texture of coarse sea salt.

Combine Coffee and Water:

  • In a large jar or pitcher, add the coarsely ground coffee.
  • Pour the cold or room temperature water over the coffee grounds.

Stir and Steep:

  • Stir the mixture gently to ensure all the coffee grounds are fully saturated with water.
  • Cover the jar or pitcher and let it steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours. Longer steeping times will result in a stronger brew.

Strain the Coffee:

  • After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean jar or pitcher. This will remove the coffee grounds.
  • If you want a clearer brew, strain it a second time.

Serve and Store:

  • Serve the cold brew coffee over ice and enjoy. You can dilute it with water or milk if it’s too strong.
  • Store the remaining cold brew in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Tips:

  • Experiment with Ratios: You can adjust the coffee-to-water ratio to find the strength that suits your taste. A common range is between 1:4 and 1:8 (coffee to water).
  • Add Flavors: You can enhance your cold brew by adding flavors like vanilla, cinnamon, or chocolate during the steeping process.
  • Use Good Quality Water: The quality of water affects the taste of your cold brew. Use filtered water for the best results.
